Restless Inside

“Restless Inside” is a selection from my first book of poetry In Speaking Of…

Restless Inside

By Nikki Anne Schmutz

Restless inside…
as a piece of string with not a thing to bind
as a root of a bulb awaiting a frozen Winter’s thaw
as an unwound kite on a flat summer’s afternoon
as a bound umbrella waiting in the heavy stand at the door
as a shell taken up from its water, left to dry on a shelf
as a lock forgotten by years, hidden in layers of dust
as an ocean wave never able to hold the sand in its grasp
as a letter hidden in the crumbling wall of an old Victorian
as a gust of wind personified, exiled to the unseen realm
as a sail-less vessel docked in a cemented harbor
as an etched crystal vase in the cupboard longing for use
as a stream racing downhill when it wishes to climb
as a baby grand piano unplayed, covered with ages of dust
as a drawn curtain wanting to part, allowing rays to enter
as an hourglass wishing to be turned, spilling its sand once again
as a tear unable to escape the confines of its cause
as a heart awaiting to be claimed by its only love…
the now, the past, what is to be
restless for it all, restless to just be…

ReStory YOU Event Announcement!

Since I was a guest on his podcast, Life is a Marathon,  Bruce Van Horn has been one of my greatest supporters. He’s encouraged me to step even further outside my comfort zone and has reminded me that my own journey of overcoming traumatic experiences has given me something to offer to the world.

Bruce has invited me to be one of four guest speakers at his ReStory YOU! event this October in Fort Lauderdale, Florida! I invite all of you to join me! There are seats available, and are even a limited number of scholarship admissions for those of you who can’t quite afford to come! I can’t wait to share this experience with you!

Sanguine

Sanguine

In the uncertain vestibules of night,
she reminds herself – dark corners
once held light and can be reclaimed.
Though accusatory words can injure the soul,
they mean little to one who reaffirms
strength found in a trodden heart.
Though bitter to some, truth
fills her hopeless heart with fluid faith.
Though her path is misunderstood,
she walks it bravely with lead shoes of certainty.
Slow is her journey towards joy, yet she will find it
in the sanguine strongholds of her heart.

Painful decisions must be confronted. Many will never understand why you make them. Though people mean well in their attempts to help you see your “mistakes” – they don’t know the whole story. Pain revealed is not always accepted as truth, but is often used as fodder for gossip. Stay strong to the truth you know in your heart, never falter, give away your resolve, or give in to things that make your life unhappy and unfulfilled. Don’t be afraid to remind others of their ignorance as you resolutely step towards the changes building your future.

Timid Feet

Timid Feet

I’ve learned being timid left me wishing I had spoken my  mind. Feeling like I didn’t have a voice, left me with resentments I carried around for years. I decided it was better to bravely step forward and declare myself for who I was and what I wanted. Can you do the same? I hope so. You’ll be happier for it….
