Hope

We must let go of fear and allow hope to flow freely – it is the only way we can truly follow our hearts.

Perfect Belonging

Written by Jane K. Wilson
Read by Nikki Anne Schmutz

He has seen the quiet, the patient, the deeply contained and controlled, he has known the simple sweet obedient and most certainly he has lived the crazy drama too, unrepentant, driven wild. But who am I, to him, who am I to the world, to myself? Only his, nothing else. Just an awkward blend of deviant innocence, an overheated imagination that cannot stop, a love as wide and as deep as any child’s, a woman to warm his bed, a darkness shared. I am passion, presence, love, all wrapped together. I am what he wishes I should be. No more doubt or shame to spare, born to dance with him alone. He is the chaos that I want to get lost in, the senseless wordless terror of the world. I should be terrified but instead he softly calls to me like a warm blanket, a place of perfect belonging. And so when the storm has passed, as it always must, sun lies beyond the clouds, peace lives in the enveloping silence, and our love endures.

Guest Poet Reading – Tony Lodato II

Heart Held by Air…

By Tony Lodato II
Read by Nikki Anne Schmutz

I long for the
Night when we
Will finally meet
The moment when
These words can lay
Still as I listen to your air

Air that escapes
Air that resurrects
Air that breathes life
Air that moves my mind
Air that confides secrets
Air that whispers like wind

I yearn for the
Evening when we
Shall embrace so tight
End to an old beginning
Beginning of a new ending
Listening to drum of my heart

A heart that fills
A heart that dies
A heart that wants
A heart that believes
A heart that is rediscovered
A heart that I want you to keep

Tony is a staple in the Facebook poetry community. It’s an honor to read his poem for my YouTube Channel! He runs the page Creative Musings with TL II on facebook.

Revival

I have found there is only one place true change can happen. Deep inside the soul. It has to start there. No one can MAKE you happy. Once you find the unimaginable beauty inside yourself, the place where you feel true joy in the smallest of things, it will filter out into the rest of your life. Only then will you see with new eyes, eyes of love and appreciation.

High Wire Act

High Wire Act

I leave the solid platform,
my feet inch forward.
Afraid to look down,
I dare myself to conquer
the dizzying heights.

Inches are miles,
miles are light years.
If only I knew how
to fly in hyper drive –
pass the expansive miles
in blurry, elongated seconds
to arrive at my destination –
a place where my soul
discovers peace and happiness.

With arms outstretched
my shaky feet continue,
edging along the wire.
My eyes fixed on the goal –
a light in the distance…

Life is a balancing act.  Sometimes we are master performers; creating the perfect show out of the life we have. Other times we fail; dropping all the balls we have in the air. This is life. We are not perfect. We strive. We try. We fail… and we succeed. What matters is that we are focused on the light ahead of us, focused on the things that give our lives meaning. If we know where we are going, the detours are merely detours. We end up at our destination. We end up with a life full of meaning. It is after all the journey we are meant to enjoy, not just the destination.

Perspective

Perspective

My feet hit the dirt trail
at a faster pace than normal
The incline increases
I don’t slow, I push harder
Muscles scream
Lungs tighten
Each step carries me further away
from a quagmire of thoughts

Maybe I can outdistance
the incessant worries
if I leave them
at the foot of this mountain
Maybe I can climb until
the air clears and it feels
as if I could reach out
and touch the sun

I collapse at the summit
Aware of every fiber of my being
The sun feels different
The breeze is strong and full
of voices only heard in nature
I gaze at the world below me
and am reminded
sometimes a new perspective
is all that’s needed

~

We’ve all heard the saying before “You can’t see the forest for the trees”. It’s so easy to get caught up in the busy lives we lead and lose perspective of who we are and where we are going. Growing up, my family went on many camping trips. I’ve hiked many mountains (large and small) with my Uncle Lance as a guide. I learned at a young age that there was nothing as inspiring as reaching the summit, feeling that accomplishment as you looked down at the world around you. The view from that vantage point was so different from the view from the valley floor. Being able to see for miles, having a bird’s eye of the world if only for a few minutes offered up an expansive feeling that I would never have known otherwise. This type of perspective transcends anything physical, it speaks to the soul. Those are the moments I feel the closest to God, and the most in touch with the truest form of myself. Perspective is everything.

Oxygen

Oxygen

Too many years
Of shallow breath
Left me gasping
Reaching for inhalation
Light headed
Dizzy from asphyxia
Of soul

With each new step
I inhale
Lungs fill
Breath renewed
Reminders of a life
Discovered
By exploration

You are my oxygen

~

Life can leave us jaded, afraid to take the  breaths that will renew our spirit and minds. Too often we get stuck in ruts, continually digging deeper and deeper instead of making progress. Isn’t it nice, when someone (or something) comes along and we are reminded there is more? It really isn’t that they are actually our oxygen, but rather a reason to breathe freely, a reason to exist in a world where we wish to explore and be happy.
