Saudade

Saudade

Day Nine of National Poetry Day and NaPoWriMo

This poem comes from a writing prompt.

Saudade is used to explain the feeling of missing someone or something you used to have but don’t have anymore. But it goes so much deeper! It’s a word of Portuguese origin, evoking loneliness and a feeling of being incomplete. It means “the love that remains” – the residual of emotions, memories, events or places that once brought joy, and still brings about the sense of wanting to live again. It is a deep, nostalgic longing. It is sad and happy feelings all at once;  “Sadness from missing something loved. Happiness for having experienced the love.”
