Slipping Away

I’ve stood upon the banks
of death and watched life
slip away, taken fast
on an unstoppable current –
broken sails waving a surrender
to a darkening sky of eyes
closing for the last time.
Plentiful sunsets are taken
for granted in this world of
wasteful, watered-down appreciation.
In those last moments, expelled breath
holds all we have ever been.
I’ve felt such breath, heavy
air infused with remnants of soul
searching for a place
to once again be.

A small moment this week ignited these words in my mind.  Life should be valued by love, counted in minutes spent absorbed in happiness and wonder. I wish to leave memories of goodness in my wake. I’ll keep trying to create moments to be remembered after I’m gone, paths I’ve taken to be followed by those who were touched by all I someday leave behind.
